IEC 61850 Technical Conference: Fundamentals, Applications, and Benefits

Monday, April 11, 2016 | University of Maine

IEC 61850 is a family of standards used to govern substation automation and protection via TCP/IP networks.  It is an open protocol and not proprietary to any vendor or manufacturer. The advantage of the IEC 61850 family is the ability to use it for protection and control due to its high speed capability. The protocol has the ability to preclude the need for hard wired controls where allowed by standards and practice. It is anticipated that continued adoption and proliferation of IEC 61850 will occur in North America.

The northeast region of the US has been actively implementing IEC 61850 in substations. In fact, the Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP) installed and upgraded numerous substations using IEC 61850 for automation, integration and protection functions. Numerous individuals have developed broad expertise and user experience with the implementation of the IEC 61850 application.

The conference is an opportunity for industry, regulators, and educators to learn more about IEC 61850. The anticipated speakers will range from champions of IEC 61850 use in North America to regulators and anticipated guidelines and requirements implementing IEC 61850 to system integrators and end users who have detailed experience with IEC 61850 compliant substations.

Conference participants will be exposed to a myriad of topics regarding IEC 61850. The presentation of material will benefit all; from those new to IEC 61850 to implementation experts. For the inexperienced attendee, an overview of the protocol will be provided.  Further, regulators will give perspectives on what the future may hold for IEC 61850 in North America. Seasoned experts will learn about integration issues and compatibility of systems. Further, end users will discuss their long term experience with automation systems and what they might do differently if they had an opportunity to revise the preliminary designs.
